We are pleased to announce the First Annual Value of the Liberal Arts Essay Contest for High School Seniors. All Washington State high school seniors enrolled during the 2013-14 academic year are eligible to enter. The First Prize winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship to a Washington Consortium for the Liberal Arts (WaCLA) school, the Second Prize winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship to a WaCLA institution, and the Third Prize winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to a WaCLA school. Winners must be admitted to and matriculate in a WaCLA institution to receive their scholarship. Participating institutions can be viewed on the WaCLA home page.
This contest is part of the Washington Consortium for the Liberal Arts outreach program designed to promote the power and value of the liberal arts. Numerous colleges and universities, both public and private, two-year and four-year, all across the State of Washington have come together to create a cohesive, coherent voice.
The contest requires students to write an essay of no more than 500 words in response to the prompt below. All entries must be submitted via this web site.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 31, 2014 at 5:00 pm PST.

In no more than 500 words, discuss the relationship between the liberal arts and democratic principles.
Essays must be submitted on this site. Essays must be received at this site by Friday, January 31, 2014 at 5:00 pm PST. No late entries will be accepted. Essays cannot be more than 500 words. Your submission must be double-spaced and entered as either a .pdf or a Word document. As part of the online submission of your essay, you will need to complete a waiver and provide some basic demographic information.
